Prime Minister Andy Burnham plans to secure legislation ending the state pension triple lock before the next election, the government said. MPs will consider the changes during the current parliament, although the existing guarantee will continue until 2030.
Burnham announced the policy shift in his conference address. Under the current system, state pensions increase each year by whichever is greatest: 2.5%, the rate of inflation or growth in earnings. More details are expected as the story develops.
