Saudi Arabia accused Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels of attempting the attack, and the Saudi-led coalition described it as a “disgraceful act.” The drone was reported shot down south of Mecca, before it entered the city.
The allegation has drawn attention because Mecca is the focal point of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Saudi Arabia called pilgrims’ security a “red line,” and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned the reported attack as “heinous.” Countries in the region also issued condemnations, though the coverage reported no sign of military support. The central dispute remains whether Mecca was the intended target: Saudi Arabia says it was, while the Houthis reject that claim.
