Yemen is trending because a rapid Houthi advance along its strategic coastline is strengthening the group’s grip on a major Red Sea shipping route, while escalating fighting has displaced at least 46,000 people. The Iran-backed Houthis claim a major advance and are reported to have seized Perim, a strategic island on the route. Their capture of a stretch of coastline is described as the rebels’ most significant military success in several years.
The gains matter beyond the territory itself. The Houthis were already able to disrupt shipping, but the advance consolidates that power and exposes the weakness of Yemen’s government. It is also drawing attention because of its potential to add a dangerous new dimension to the Iran war. Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll is growing: the International Organisation for Migration warns that the number of people displaced by the escalating fighting is rising “by the hour.”
