Release dates can still move. Rockstar has delayed GTA 6 before, so treat any date as a target until the game is in stores.

When does GTA 6 come out?

Rockstar's current target is November 19, 2026. The game was first pencilled in for 2025, then moved into 2026, and later shifted again to the November date. Rockstar has said the extra time is to reach the level of polish players expect. If you see a different date on social media, check whether it comes from Rockstar or Take-Two directly — most 'new dates' online are guesses.

Which platforms is GTA 6 on?

At launch GTA 6 is confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version. A PC release has not been announced; GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both reached PC a year or more after console, so many players expect a similar pattern — but that is an expectation, not a confirmation.

Where is GTA 6 set? Leonida and Vice City

The game takes place in Leonida, Rockstar's fictional take on Florida. Vice City — the neon, beach-front city first seen in the 2002 game — returns as the main urban hub, surrounded by swamps, keys, small towns and highways. The trailers show a far bigger and denser world than GTA V's Los Santos, with crowded beaches, wildlife-filled wetlands and a strong social-media satire theme.

Who are the main characters?

For the first time in the modern series, a woman — Lucia — is one of the lead characters. She is joined by Jason, and the trailers frame them as a criminal duo in a Bonnie-and-Clyde style story. Rockstar has not detailed how switching between them works, but GTA V's three-character switching suggests a similar system.

Should you upgrade your setup before launch?

If you still play on a PS4 or Xbox One, you will need a current-generation console. If you already own a PS5 or Series X|S, the biggest upgrades that actually change how GTA 6 feels are a good TV like the LG C4 OLED, a comfortable headset such as the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 and enough storage, like a WD_BLACK SN850P for PS5 — open-world games of this size are expected to be very large downloads. We cover each of those in our gear guides.

  • Ready-for-launch checklist: a PS5 or Xbox Series X, at least 150 GB free space, stable internet for the day-one download.
  • Nice to have: a 4K TV or monitor with HDR, a headset with good positional audio, a spare DualSense controller.
